Muruga Booker - Drums, Percussion
Muruga Booker has devoted his life to using rhythm to
teach and entertain children and adults around the world. He has
recorded with many artists including Jerry Garcia, Dave Brubeck,
Weather Report, George Clinton, and Paul Winter. His music has
taken him from Woodstock to San Francisco to Ann Arbor. His
expertise covers everything from traditional African drumming
to modern trap set techniques and a whole lot in between.
Muruga continues to write, record and perform professionally,
though still finding time to teach.
Whether guiding an individual, conducting a group jam or
leading a drum circle, Muruga creates an environment that
allows students to unleash their latent talents. Muruga takes
cues from his students that allow them to learn as if through
osmosis. Muruga is fond of saying, "I teach without teaching."
Although Muruga's approach is unique, it is based on sound educational
principles. Using teachable moments, Muruga intuitively adjusts his
instructional techniques so students grow as fast as conditions allow.
He trusts his students innate ability to uncover knowledge on their own.
Muruga guides students on a path that allows them to form mental links
between the known and the unknown. Before they know it, Muruga
says, "students are falling into the music and playing drums with me."
With Muruga, drums offer a way to build bridges between the body,
mind and spirit. Let Muruga use his musical talents, educational
expertise and your hidden talents to help you experience life through drums.
